Concelho de Macau Macau
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This Cemetery was founded in 1858 with funds subscribed by various mercantile firms of the Protestant faith in Macau. This followed a decision by the Macau government not to permit further burials to take place within the city limits necessitating the closure of the Old Protestant Cemetery at Praca Luis de Camoes.
Until the founding of the Old Protestant Cemetery in 1821, Protestants were not permitted to be buried in Macau and were interred on the surrounding hills. This cemetery contains a number of the latter graves dating back to the 18th century which were moved here in 1838.
The Cemetery is administered by the Macau Protestant Chapel and Cemeteries Fund.

In the cemetery there are 71 named headstones (though two are partly illegible and another, which seems not to be a footstone, bears only initials), and I counted 44 unmarked headstones.
