The Cumberland County Historical Society has no record of this church ever being known as St. James Church; however, a burial list exists which documents the contrary. This burial list can be found at http://files.usgwarchives.net/pa/cumberland/cemeteries/silspr01.txt
A church history was written by Genifrede Walter in 1923, which references a story about a little boy named James Given, who dropped a quarter in the corner stone during the dedication of the new church in 1858. The quarter, along with his name, are sealed in the stone. Perhaps the church may have been called "James' Church" by local people and this is how "St. James Church" came to be documented on the burial list. Whether the St. James name is an error or not may never be known. Currently, no documentation exists to validate or disprove it.
