Cemetery notes and/or description:
Benenden is a village and civil parish in the Tunbridge Wells District of Kent, England. The parish is located on "The Weald" six miles to the west of Tenterden. The place name of Benenden (pronounced Ben-in-dn) derives from Old English meaning Bynna's wooded pasture. Bynning denn became Benindene (1086) Binnigdaenne, Bennedene (c1100) Bynindenne (1253) then the current spelling from 1610. The Domesday Book surveyors remarked that Benindene was one of only four places in the Weald to have a church. From the 14th century places such as Benenden became of industrial importance. The Wealden ironmasters continued what the Romans had done; and the other major industry, cloth-making, also helped to make the village prosperous. By the late 18th century, however, both industries had moved to the industrial north, and Benenden's prosperity was at an end. The parish church is dedicated to St George, and is a 19th century building on the site of a medieval building destroyed in a fire on Monday 30th December 1672.It had been enlarged towards the end of the 13th century followed by more alterations in 1418.It was a skilfully constructed wooden building on a stone foundation, situated some ten or twenty feet from the north-west corner of the nave and stated to have been 132 feet high - nearly twice as lofty as the present tower. The interior of the church then remained little altered until 1861 when it was entirely re-designed. The churchyard is still used for burials. The main area is to the south and west of the church overlooking farmland. The older part of the churchyard is managed by controlled grazing. There are six wargraves in the churchyard.(text by Geoffrey Gillon)
