|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
5445 Point Clair Road
The cemetery was created as a burial place for the patients & staff of the Carville National Leprosarium, now known as the Gillis W. Long Hansen's Disease Center.
The cemetery is open to the public 10 AM to 4:30 PM and is contained in the old hospital site. The site is now a Louisiana Army National Guard base with 100% ID check at the gate. It is advisable to call to verify accessibility, 225-642-1950, because of changing levels of national security observed by the National Guard gatehouse.
The museum (open Tues. - Sat., closed federal holidays) has a full list of those buried onsite with accompanying plot locations and can provide photos of headstones. Email requests to NHDPMuseum@hrsa.gov.
