Atkinson Cemetery
Bancroft, Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, USA
From Greenville take Highway 62W to Highway 189. Turn left on Highway 189 and go about 8 miles to Eli Lane. turn right on Eli Lane and go 3/10 mile, turn left just before you get to a gate and go back in the woods about 1/4 mile. You will have to walk to the cemetery.
Elisha Atkinson settled this land about 1805 and remained in the Atkinson family until late 1930's. there are several field stone markers scattered through the woods. It is believed that Elisha and John Swan Atkinson Sr and other family members are buried here.
sometime in the mid 1940's Eddie Atkinson (son of John Swan and Rosalind Atkinson) poured the cement for the walkway to enclose the stone for J.S., R.J. Atkinson and six sandstone markers. There are two other stones that we could copy inscriptions and another unreadable stone.
Photos and inscriptions by Jean Wells and Ann Lile Musial March 6,2007, additional information from Margaret Jane Mason Prowse's "Atkinson" family papers completed 15 Feb. 1982
