|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Per J. Samples, Sanford, NC: The Sams Cemetery I'm sure came about this way and I've read this in a Clay Co. history book: During the Civil War Alfred Sams (1840-1926) served as a substitute for William Paxton who married Priscilla Samples. Priscilla had inherited some land from her father. After the war Paxton couldn't pay Sams for his service and gave the land to Alfred Sams. In 1944 when Abraham Clotten Sams (g-grandson to the above Alfred) was killed in the Battle of the Bulge his body was brought back to this cemetery. (this info is per the WV Archives).
