|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The location of Mt. Bethel Cemetery is marked by three tall trees on the east side of busy, six-lane Johnson Ferry Road (adjacent to 750 Johnson Ferry Road), just a few yards north of its intersection with Lower Roswell Road in unincorporated East Cobb County, Georgia. According to its sign, the cemetery was established in 1870, in what was then a rural area of cotton fields and farms not far from the Chattahoochee River.
The cemetery contains graves with markers dating burials back to the 1860's. It also probably contains an unknown number of unmarked graves and at least 157 graves marked only by fieldstones, bricks, or other materials without inscriptions, according to the book _Cobb County, Georgia Cemeteries_, Vol. 1, 2nd edition, Sharon Dart Thomas, Editor, Cobb County GA Genealogical Society, Inc., 1999, pages 90-101.
The cemetery was originally near Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church (organized in 1840), which has served the Mt. Bethel/East Cobb community for more than 160 years. Today the church is known as Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church and it is located 0.8 miles west of the cemetery, along Lower Roswell Road.
