Cemetery notes and/or description:
Historically Golgotha was the first burying ground in Amesbury (ca. 1654). In 1663 the town bought one acre of land from Edman Elleat for a burying place which in now Union Cemetery.

In 1903, through the generosity of Amesbury native Gayden Morrill, “Golgotha” the burial ground of the first settlers of Amesbury, was donated to the Amesbury Improvement Association and is still maintained by the group. The AIA installed a plaque and stone in 1903. There are no gravestones left.

The Amesbury Cemetery Commission states that there is only one known burial on this site and it is of Gregory Hoyt. The AIA states that it is thought that there are about 40 people buried here, many of them children, however there are no records.

The 18 names on the memorial stone are cenotaphs.
