Many of the gravestones in Tararu and Shortland do not record people's birthplaces. The Tararu sexton's records, randomly selected for 1879, show death listings for males born in Denmark, Norway and the Cape Colony.
No 3127 Tanutanu Block was owned by: Mere Watana, Pare Watana,, Te
Arani Watana, Mereana Rewiti, Mata te Kura and Miria Rangioke and
purchased in 1875 by the Crown, even though burials already had taken
place.
To date it is unclear when the first burials took place, but it was
pre-July 1873, the first recorded burial was 19 August 1873. The
layout was designed by Mr R J McFarland in 1875 with room for 650
graves over 8 acres of land. The Cemetery was open for burials from
1873 to 1997 when it was deemed a dis-used Cemetery rather than a
closed Cemetery.
Copies of these burial records/sexton's books are available to view at
The Treasury, 705 Queen Street, Thames, New Zealand. Thames Coromandel
Council Online records are available, But please note due to
transcribing from original records there may be a few errors in
spelling or dates.
