Scotch Church Cemetery
Also known as Florida United Presbyterian Church Cemetery
Florida, Montgomery County, New York, USA
The Scotch Church Cemetery is located in the Town of Florida in Montgomery County. It's sitting on the former property of the Florida United Presbyterian Church. This church was deactivated and sold in 1973. The church building burned in 1987.
The first burial in the Scotch Church Cemetery was in 1802 and last in 1891. The remains of over 60 folks were transferred to nearby Van Vechten Cemetery after it became a public cemetery in 1883.
Melvin Lethbridge of Amsterdam did a reading of the cemetery in 1926 -- denoted here as NYG&B (1926).
In 1938, the Federal Writer's Project of the Works Progress Administration, State of New York, of burials at the Scotch Church Cemetery.
Later in 1938, the Rev. Robert D. Mahaffy, pastor of the Florida United Presbyterian Church, did further research on the burial list and added additional information, which is bracketed, as well as the following notes:
"About 183 burials. Those marked 'X' I could not locate on Dec. 13, 1938 after checking all stones. List originally made by Works Progress Adm., 119 State St., Albany, NY which copied inscriptions under direction of Marie Noll Cormack, October 2, 1938. They also used incomplete list made by Melvin Lethbridge of Amsterdam in 1926."
Note that all sources have been examined and compared so that anyone and everyone listed as being buried in Scotch Church Cemetery has been added to Find-a-Grave.
Also, note that the cemetery is on private property. Be sure to speak to the homeowner behind whose house the cemetery sits. He states (in Nov. 2009) that he had a recent problem with some gravers "knocking over gravemarkers" (presumably wedged in the ground at a hard to see angle), chalking gravemarkers and "digging in the ground" for who knows what.
