The Swineford Cemetery was a small private family burying ground for the family of "Albrecht Schweinford" 1728-1810 (pronounced "Albright Swineford" in English), and his wife Margareth (Margaret) Schneider (Snyder), of Swinefordstown (now known as Middleburg), in what was then part of
Northumberland County (now part of Snyder County) Pennsylvania.
Albrecht's eldest son John Albright Swineford Sr. (1758-1805), was the founder of Swinefordstown (now Middleburg), Pennsylvania, about 1798-1800, when he laid out 105 lots on his land.
The cemetery was located 75 yards West of the Middleburg depot, and the "American Legion Post No. 52", whose hall was within 20 feet of the old graveyard. (The American Legion Post was later made into a bar).
The cemetery was located on the South side of Middle Creek, where Route 104 (S. Wausau Road), and Route 522 (E. Main St.) meet, South of town, just before crossing the bridge (on E. Main St.), over Middle Creek.
The headstone for "Albrecht Schweinford" (Albright Swineford), was written in German. The English translation is as follows:
"Here Rests Albright Swineford. He was born the 16 February in the Year of Christ 1728, and died October 15, 1810"
(per: "Tombstone Inscriptions of Snyder County PA", Compiled by George W. Wagenseller, 1904, page 103).
A memorial (a bronze plaque on a large boulder), was errected near the center of the Glendale Cemetery in Middleburg, PA, for Albrecht Schweinford (Swineford), his two sons, John Albright Swineford Sr., George Michael Swineford Sr., and four others, found to be buried in the old Swineford Cemetery. It reads:
"In memory of Albrecht Schweinford 1728-1810, father of Johannes Schweinford [John Albright Swineford Sr.] 1758-1805, founder of Schweinfordstettle [the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect for Swinefordstown], now known as Middleburg, and to the memory of local citizens, viz:
George Swineford [Sr.], Solomon Aurand, Daniel King, George Kremer [Sr.], George Kremer [Jr.] , et. al., at rest in desecrated graves in old Swineford Cemetery".
The known burials for the "Swineford" family, in the Swineford Cemetery were:
1. John Albright Swineford Sr., in Jan. 1805
(the founder of Swinefordstown).
2. Albrecht Schweinford (Swineford),
(the father of John Sr.), in Oct. 1810.
3. George Michael Swineford Sr.,
(the brother of John Sr.), in April 1818.
4. And "possibly" (in unmarked grave?) for:
John Albright Swineford Jr.,
(the son of John Sr.), in Sept. 1818.
The book titled "Tombstone Inscriptions: A Collection made from all the burying grounds in Snyder County", by George W. Wagenseller, 1904, states on page 103, that there were 7 "marked" graves (still ledgeable), in the Swineford cemetery.
Those 7 "marked" graves were for:
1. Albrecht Swineford, Feb. 16, 1728-Oct. 15, 1810.
2. Johannes Swineford [John Albright Swineford Sr.],
April 16, 1758-Jan. 15, 1805 (son of Albrecht).
Founder of Swinefordstown (Middleburg), PA.
3. George Michael Swineford [Sr.]
died April 5, 1818, age 54 (son of Albrecht).
4. Solomon Aurand, 1805-1813, age 8,
son of Johannes (John) Aurand. [John Aurand's second wife was Catherine Elizabeth Swineford, daughter of John Sr.].
5. Daniel King, died Oct. 8, 1815, age 23.
6. George Kremer [Sr.]. Born in Middletown, Lancaster Co. PA on Nov. 21, 1775. Died in Middleburg, PA on Sept. 10, 1854. Member of PA State House of Representatives 1812-1813. Elected to Congress. (Also worked for his Uncle Gov. Simon Snyder).
7. George Kremer [Jr.], April 17, 1827-Oct. 3, 1833, age 6 (son of George Kremer Sr. and his wife Catharine Evans).
It is thought that there were many other members of the Swineford family buried in the Swineford Cemetery, who either had no headstones, or their headstones were no longer standing when this cemetery was recorded many years later.
"Snyder County Pioneers" states the following on page 18:
It is supposed that John Cummings (the husband of Albrecht Swineford's daughter Catherine), is buried in the old Swineford Cemetery, in Middleburg".
Albrecht Swineford, and his two sons John Albright Swineford Sr. and George Michael Swineford Sr., all served in the Revolutionary War together, in "Captain John Rutherford's Company, in the 4th Battalion of the Lancaster County PA Militia" (George as a 13-year-old drummer boy).
After many years of neglect (and after it was brought to the attention of the American Legion), on Memorial Day of 1919, the people of the town, for the first time, held a Memorial Day service at the Swineford Cemetery. Their graves were marked with flags and emblems, and the regulation volleys were fired in their honor.
Northumberland County PA. Deed Book I, page 208, states the following: Dec. 13, 1772.
Albright Swineford, yeoman, of Paxton township, Lancaster county [now Dauphin Co.], Pennsylvania, purchased a tract of 639 acres and 153 perches on Middle Creek in Penn township, Northumberland county [now Snyder Co.], Pennsylvania, from George Bauder, yeoman, of Greenwood township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, for 62 pounds.
Albrecht moved his family from near Middletown, Paxton township, Lancaster County (now part of Dauphin Co.), PA,
(along with the Kremer, and Schneider (Snyder) families and others), to what would become known as Swinefordstown, in Penn township, Northumberland County (now Snyder County) PA.
In 1778, Albrecht Swineford was taxed in Penn township, Northumberland Co. (now Snyder Co.), PA.
In 1780, Albrecht Swineford is listed as owning 680 acres, and a grist and saw mill.
The name was changed from Swinefordstown, to Middleburg about 1825.
