To visit the cemetery, obtain the key from the address marked on the sign near 903 5th Avenue. In July of 2015, the key holder address was 803 5th Avenue. Proceed past the gate about .7 mile along the mostly level shaded gravel path. When you reach the cemetery gate, your key will open one of the locks securing the chain that locks the gate to the cemetery.
In 1864 Absolom Hedges donated 1.91 acres for a cemetery. By 1865 the Canemah Cemetery Association was formed and received a deed. In 1883 the Rhinehart family donated a 30 ft. wide roadway to 5th Avenue. In 1914 the cemetery was surveyed and iron markers placed at each corner to replace original blaze marks on trees. In 1993, a new association was activated to maintain the property from decades of neglect. There are about 280 graves of pioneers and descendants of their families.
