Calvary Cemetery was established in 1869 and there were two burials that year. The first was Thomas Johnson who was seven years old and Willie Long who was five years old. Thomas Johnson is the oldest burial in our cemetery; he was buried April of 1869 two months before the deed for the purchase of the cemetery property was finalized. (Their gravesites are located at the end of the longest new, sidewalk to the east).
The cemetery land (two acres) was sold on June 4, 1869 by John C. & Bridget (Brannigan) Stump to Archbishop Alemany of the San Francisco Archdiocese, for one hundred dollars in gold coin. Some people think Jasper O'Farrell donated the land for the cemetery but history shows the following: Jasper 0' Farrell once did own this property. It was a small part of a huge territory that was obtained from O'Farrel in 1863 by Benjamin Belloc. In 1866, Belloc sold 124 acres to John Stump, which included the cemetery land. It was Fr. Slattery, pastor from Tomales who negotiated with the Stumps for the cemetery land. John Stump was not a Catholic; his wife, former Bridget Brannigan was a native of Ireland and a Catholic. I suspect we can thank her for getting the "wheels in motion". The negotiations started early in 1868 and completed in 1869.
Buried in our cemetery are many famous local families from the late 1800's: Albini, Colombo, Fitzpatrick, Franceschi, Furlong, Gleason, Gonnella, O'Farrel, Pozzi, and Stump to name a few.
Nicholas Green is also buried in our cemetery. Nicholas, while traveling in southern Italy with his family was mistakenly shot and killed by bandits. Nicholas was seven years old at the time. His parents donated his organs to the people in Italy and to this day when you visit Italy you will see large posters with his picture on them asking people to become organ donators. He is the poster child of the organization in Italy.
Nicholas's gravesite is located near the top of the cemetery on the left of the sidewalk. There is a wooden bench at the bottom of his burial plot.
