The land was a part of the Withers' Family Plantation. It is believed that Capt. Withers and one of his children are buried here in a presently unmarked grave.
William Todd, one of six Confederate Veterans buried with in Withers, obtained the cemetery as part of the purchase of 700 acres of land about 1870. William Todd donated the land/cemetery, in the same year, to what is now First Baptist Church.
There are many unknown burials in Withers'. On June 30, 2009. Horry County Board of Agriculture Review Board and Historical Preservation (BAR) used a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to determine where the possible other gravesites are. When finished they found about 25 unmarked possible burials locations.
NOTE: Ground Penetrating Radar is just a devise to determine if the ground has been disturbed by waves that measure the density of the ground below; it is not an X-Ray machine. That is why I have listed them as possible unmarked burials; I will change this if any other facts come into play.
The BAR also scanned the old African-American Cemetery across the street to find about 25 additional possible unmarked gravesites. This cemetery's occupants were relocated in the 1930's. It might be possible that some of the burials were missed and not relocated or the ground density still has not stabilized since the 1930's. I am not an expert with the GPR functions but this is my understanding of it.
Chyrel Stalvey, a member of the Horry County Historical Society, has been a great help in adding information to the memorials for Withers' Memorial Cemetery. Thank You Chyrel Stalvey for all your contributions.
If you see any errors please let me know so they can be corrected, A.S.A.P. Also let me know if you add any Photos. I would love place a face with their name. Feel free to email me at [email protected].
