In 1894 the Fishhawk Cemetery Association was formed with the donation
of two acres of land by Antoni Berg.He purchased this land from Noble
Dunlap for the cemetery. The property is located on Bates Hill
overlooking the Nehalem River. The Association was incorporated in 1895,
and John Boxler was elected secretary-treasurer.He served until his
death in 1910.A fire in the early 1900s at Boxler's house on Fishhawk
Creek reduced the cemetery records to ashes.A summary of nine years of
cemetery history was rewritten from memory by John Boxler.
These rewritten cemetery records show Harriet Foster, who died in
November, 1893, was the first person to be buried in Fishhawk Cemetery.
In 1899, Katherine Jepson had Eric Jepson's casket taken to the new
cemetery. He had died in August, 1893.Other early burials on family or
neighboring property were also reburied here, including Hiram Carl,
William Van Volkinburg, and Ivan Pederson.
At Mr. Boxler's death in 1910, the Fishhawk Cemetery Association elected
John Banzer as Secretary-Treasurer.He held the post until his death in 1951.
