The ancient Abbey of Clairefontaine is located at Clairefontaine, a Hamlet 4 km from the Belgian town of Arlon (Luxembourg province), and a few hundred metres from the border of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It was a noble nuns Cistercian Abbey, founded in 1247 by Ermesinde de Luxembourg and destroyed during the French Revolution.
Ermesinde had a dream while she was resting near the de Saint-Bernard. In the dream the Virgin wanted her to build a Cistercian Abbey located there. The construction works began in 1216.
By testament (dated 1247) Ermesinde 'founded' financially L'Abbaye de Clairefontaine. It was stipulated that the Abbey of noble nuns to be in Cistercian tradition and the Abbay became burial place for the members of her family. Her tomb was found there when the ruins were explored in the 19th century.
