107 YEARS OLD
McCormacks Church The Oldest In Lincoln
McCormacks church was originally put up by the Baptists 107 years ago. It passed into the hands of the Christian denomination in October, 1829, but in 1817 what was then a frame building was replaced by the present substantial brick, Capt. Daniel McCormack doing the work.
The grave-yard surrounding the church is over 100 years old. Among the old tomb-stones I noticed the inscription on one of Noel Johnson, died 1802. He was the great grandfather of Judge J. W. Alcorn and the Peytons, so Mr. M. S. Peyton informed me. Other inscriptions showed that sunken graves of many sleeping there were made nearly 100 years ago, among them many by the name of McCormack. One of them was that of Mary Pankey, who died in 1810, and who Dr. J. F. Peyton says was the mother of the illustrious Capt. Pankey, who made himself famous as one of Gen. Frank Wolford's daring men during the war. On another monument is inscribed - Elizabeth Good, died Dec. 26, 1846, aged 103 yrs, and she has many relatives yet living in this section. Another: John Craig, died in 1800. He a great-uncle of Hon. Harvey Helm.
The beautiful flowers, the twining, clinging ivy, so abundant in that grave yard, the decaying, crumbling tombstones and the newly-made graves preach sermons to thoughful people, right under the shadow of the old church, where so many awaiting the resurrection morn now sleep, and both yard and church are dearly loved by hundreds, if not thousands, both on account of the living and the dead.
