There are about 175 marked gravestones and another ten or twelve which are marked with large rocks, iron bars, etc. which identify a grave site but do not identify the one buried. There are many other graves which have no markers of any type.
Although Unity Cemetery holds the remains of mainly white citizens, black family are also represented. The graves closest to Wolf Road and graves in the woods on the north end of the cemetery are the graves of black residents of the Caledonia area. There are also a number of unmarked graves in both black and white areas.
The earliest marked graves are those of John Murphy Sr., who died May 8, 1834, and John Dowdle, who died the following December. There are likely other unmarked graves that predate these. Of the graves marked, thirteen were born in the 1700's. Most of these, along others born in the early 1800's, were born in the Carolinas and moved by wagons into a Mississippi wilderness. The most recent graves are those of Erastus D. Egger (1967) and Robbie Boyd Egger (1974), his wife.
At least two of Unity Church's ministers are buried. They are Rev. Thomas Archibald (1786-1846) and Rev. W. G. Oden (1811-1861). For a history of Unity Presbyterian Church, go to http://lowndes.msghn.org/index.shtml
