Joseph Crownover (1759-1836) was born in New Jersey, a descendant of first Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam (present day New York City). He served as a Private in the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War, later migrating to South Carolina, to White County Tennessee around 1810, and finally to Franklin County Tennessee, settling on Crow Creek around 1827. His burial here in 1836 is the earliest known burial. The grave marker was dedicated by the DAR in 1995.
There are over 150 known graves and more than 35 family names represented in the cemetery. The cemetery contains 20 known graves of military/war veterans, including Revolutionary War (1), War of 1812 (2), Civil War (2), World War I (3), World War II (7), Korean War (1), Vietnam War (2), plus two Army veterans. There are a number of graves in the old section of the cemetery marked by "field stones" whose identities are known only to God, a testament to the poor but hard working people who settled this area.
The cemetery is dedicated in memory of Turney D. Crownover (1866-1949) who once owned the land the cemetery occupies. The sign reads, "Crownover Cemetery, In Memory Of Turney D. Crownover"
The cemetery is well maintained. It is managed by the Crownover Cemetery Association Trustees who conduct an annual meeting at the cemetery on the third Sunday in September at 2:00PM.
