In memory of the Erlandsons. Carl A. Erlandson was born in Skara, Sweeden in 1842. His wife Britta C. was born in Talla, Sweeden in 1848. They migrated to America, arriving in 1869. Here they were married in 1878, and lived in Lemont, Illinois. While there a son John Oscar was born in 1881, and a daughter Emma M. in 1883. The Erlandsons heard about this community, and the elder Erlandson bought a plot of land in Edmonson County, Kentucky in 1884. Without having seen the land they moved here and called it the New Sweeden after their native land. Here Ida C. was born in 1886. They built a log house in which they lived until their death. Being Christians the Erlandsons desired to worship God. They were the leaders in organizing a Sunday School which met in the community school house. Interest increased, and soon a church was organized in 1897. It was named Sweeden Missionary Baptist Church. Later the Erlandsons donated some land to the church. The church grew, and has been a blessing. The family now rests in the church cemetery, but their works live on.
