The village of Fahan is situated about 3 miles south of Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland.
St. Mura's (Church of Ireland) Church has a new cemetery at the rear. About 50 yards south of the church, on the main R238 road, is the old monastry and an ancient graveyard.
This walled graveyard contains the ruins of a monastry which was founded in the 6th century by St. Colmcille, who made one of his followers, St. Mura, the first abbot.
Also here is the famous 7th century Fahan Cross Slab.
In both the 10th and 13th centuries, the village was ransacked by the Vikings. A second monastery was built in the 16th century but later fell into decay.
The famous hymn writer Cecil Frances Humphreys ALEXANDER lived in the Old Rectory while her equally famous husband William ALEXANDER was rector here. He went on to become Bishop of Derry and Primate of All Ireland.
In the monastery graveyard is interred Agnes JONES, who trained with Florence NIGHTINGALE and nursed in the Crimean War.
The new cemetery contains a memorial to those men who lost their lives when the "HMS LAURENTIC" was sunk off the Donegal coast on January 25th 1917 by enemy action.
The church contains a 20th century stain glass window by Evie HONE which depicts St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Inside the church is a memorial to Nurse Agnes Jones. |
