Within the grounds of Oakwood Cemetery.
As early as 1884, Florence Jews began to pray together, holding lay-led Rosh Hashanah services in the local Masonic Temple. Five years later, the Sheffield Land, Iron, and Coal Company, owned by the Moses brothers, deeded land to the town for a cemetery, including three acres that were specifically set aside for use as a Jewish burial ground.
The Jewish Section of Oakwood is on the elevated portion of the cemetery along the outer edge of the uppermost driving circle. A white steel sign shows the cemetery location.
Congregation B'nai Israel of the Tri-Cites was incorporated in 1906. The original Temple building today is a Church on Atlanta Ave. The new Temple is in Florence, AL.
