|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
To reach Captain Smith Cemetery, from Huntsville take Highway 23 South for 12 miles to Witter. Continue South on Highway 23 for 1 mile; turn right on County Road 5250. This is a very narrow road and crosses War Eagle River, and winds around and through hayfields. You will come to a flagstone house. Please stop there and tell the owner that you wish to go to the cemetery. The cemetery is about 3/4 mile from the house. To reach it you must go through the farm gate to the left of the flagstone house. The gate has a No Trespassing sign on it because the owners have had problems with hunters. Follow the road/trail up the hill and through the field to reach the cemetery which is located in a grove of trees with a fence around it. This road is sometimes very rough and rutted.
This cemetery is located on property originally owned by Captain George Russell Washington Smith and his brother, Simon Peter Smith. Many members of the Smith family are buried here but Capt. Smith is buried in Dickens Cemetery at Forsyth, Missouri.
