|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
English Bench Cemetery is located in Section 5 of French Creek Township along Iowa River Drive (A-26). It is approximately 4 miles east of State Highway 76. The entry to the cemetery is poorly marked, and the cemetery itself can't be seen from the road. There is a tiny sign next to the driveway (more easily visible if you are traveling east.) The cemetery is on a dirt road only a 100 ft. or so off the highway. English Bench Cemetery was originally used for burials of the members of Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, with the earliest burial taking place in May of 1858. After Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church was built in 1870, and Mt. Hope Cemetery was laid out in 1871, most church burials took place there instead. English Bench Cemetery is still being used for burials on rare occasions.
