Cemetery notes and/or description:
On Private Property

Advised by some that there was an abandoned cemetery in the wilds of Taylor County I set forth and located the cemetery in question. It was the Old Jones Creek cemetery. People that live in the area say no one ever goes there. It is located on a farm near the headwaters of Jones Creek. The old Jones Creek road from Sprowles Ridge Road has been gated and locked to keep people out of the area. From Sprowles Ridge Road I estimate it is about one mile to the cemetery. An easier access may be from the other end of the Jones Creek Road off White Rose Road. This road is still open back to the area near the cemetery. The log cabin home of Ray Altman is at the end of the road and is located on Jones Creek. The cemetery is a short walk from the Altman place. . I would not suggest anyone go into the area without permission from the owners of the land surrounding the cemetery.

The cemetery is in terrible condition. It is unfenced and overgrown in a wooded area on the slope of a pasture field. Crazing cattle roam through it. 1 suspect they are what have knocked over most all of the stones in the cemetery. Many have been lying on the ground so long they have sunk and would require considerable effort to dig them out and upright them on their pedestals.

I easily counted 75 gravesites, leading me to believe there must be many more that are not visible.

I located 18 engraved headstones and copied the information from them. I also took photographs of each one and will make copies of the photos available to interested persons. I can scan them and send copies by Email.

The earliest burial that had a engraved headstone was Nancy, wife of Samuel Jones who died in 1863. The most recent burial that had an engraved headstone was Mary M., wife of James D. Jones who died in 1943. It is my belief no one has been buried here since 1943. Knowing early settlers in this area of Kentucky rarely left gravesites with engraved headstones, leads me to believe the cemetery may date to about 1800.
