|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
In 1979, descendants formed an organization, "The Mark Phillips Family Cemetery Association", for perpetual care of the old cemetery dating back to 1853 when Mark & Nancy's daughter, Amanda, died.
The land where the cemetery lay and right-of-way for a road were donated by Mr. James Madison Smith, son of Rev. & Mrs. Matt Smith, great-grandson of Mrs. Sheltie Griffin Smith and Rev. J.E. 'Bud' Smith, and also a great-great grandson of Mark and Nancy Sheffield Phillips. Monies received and additional contributions throughout the years lasted from January 1979 until August of 2005 when funds were used for mowing. The Southside Beautification Board alongwith Boy Scouts, their leaders and others have kept the cemetery maintained for a number of years.
Location of cemetery: From Green Valley Road onto Matt Smith Road - crossing Markton Creek (named for Mark Phillips) - sign is on left of road indicating cemetery is at the end of the road on a knoll of the old Mark Phillips property. Relatives still recall hearing family members speak of the ruins of the small church called "Trinity" which was located near the site of the family cemetery.
Data submitted by Nancy Griffin Lovvorn, great-great granddaughter of Mark and Nancy Sheffield Phillips.
