Cemetery notes and/or description:
Jedburgh Abbey is the now the ruins of an Augustinian abbey established in 1118 to house the foundation of canons by Prince David before he became King. The abbey was dedicated to the Virgin Mary about 1153, the year of David's death, and the patronage, and fidelity, was passed on to William the Lion, Alexander III, to Edward I of England and back to Robert I of Scotland and David II. Massive destruction occurred in 1410 and 1416 by Richard de the Earl of Warwick, then set afire by Henry Howard, the Earl of Surrey in 1523 with more significant damage incurred by Edward Seymour, the Earl of Hertford in 1544. At the dissolution, the monks were allowed to remain but the building was declared unsafe in 1871. The abbey ruins are now maintained by Historic Scotland.
