Adolphe Pauli, city-architect designed an drafted the original plan of this Cemetery in 1866, it is ca 14.000mē walled in cemetery, the cemetery had its first burials in 1873, Mayor Charles de Kerchhove decided Jewisch and Protetant could be buried there, the diocese refused quite a while to consecrate this cemetery and it got the nickname Geuzenkerkhof, It also has a Military burial ground with graves of ca 200 Belgian soldiers, 197 Commonwealth soldiers,many nationalities and 1 Dutch soldier.(this lot of wargraves is aka Gent City Cemetery)
