In 1890 the newly created St. Mary's Cemetery Association spent $600 to buy 2.5 acres from the Forest Cemetery Association and founded St. Mary's Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
The purchased land is physically separated from the neighboring Forest Cemetery by a city road on the south and cemetery roads on the other three sides and is a completely separate entity. Also, St. Mary's Cemetery has its own separate, well-defined entrance off of J Avenue East.
St. Mary's Cemetery of Oskaloosa, Inc., is now an Iowa corporation, with papers filed on June 9, 1997. The approved Iowa Secretary of State file number is 207095. The separate, independent, non-profit St. Mary's Cemetery corporation has its own Board of Directors and officers. The St. Mary's Board exclusively manages the St. Mary's Cemetery, to include maintaining cemetery records, selling grave spaces, contracting to open and close graves and mow grass, and paying its own water bills.
Forest Cemetery does not keep records for St. Mary's Cemetery interments, or vice versa. Forest Cemetery does not pay the bills for St. Mary's Cemetery, or vice versa. The fees for each cemetery are set independently and differ between the two cemeteries.
St. Mary's Cemetery is a separate entity from Forest Cemetery and has been for 124 years.
They are two completely different cemeteries.
