Atkinson Family Cemetery
Woodland, Northampton County, North Carolina, USA
Info from grave markers recorded July 2003. Conversations with current owners of land July 2003. Research on deeds and wills August 2003.
The three stones (Joseph Askew, Mary Eliza Atkinson Askew Johnson & George T Johnson) were placed in this cemetery after April 2001 and before July 10, 2003. At some point in time after July 2003 and before March 2005, the above three headstones were all enclosed with one large cement slab.
In his will dated February 13, 1879 and probated November 22, 1880, John Thomas Atkinson, who never married or had children included the following "...mother Priscilla Atkinson, grandmother Martha Bracy, sisters Elizabeth Warren wife of Wilie Warren, Mary E Johnson wife of Geo T Johnson, Lucinda Britt wife of K R Britt, Julia A Brittle wife of John T Brittle, Delia Sumner wife of Isaac Sumner, nephew W H Atkinson son of J H Atkinson deceased...plantation, property, household items, livestock, etc...except the Burying grounds containing a half acre of land which I reserve as a Burying Place for the family." A map of the division of this land is recorded in Deed Book 76 P 103.
Research indicated the land where the cemetery is located was purchased by James Lee and his wife Brodger Lee (African Americans) Deed Book 122 P 289 March 8, 1904 from James N Johnson and wife Abbie J Johnson. James N Johnson was the son of Mary Eliza Atkinson Askew Johnson and her second husband George Thomas Johnson. According to Althea Lee Everette, daughter of James and Brodger Lee, Althea was born in the house near the cemetery (about 1920) and during her growing-up years there were quite a few grave houses marking the final resting place for many who were buried in this location, although she didn't remember any markers or there being any names of the deceased. Mrs Everette's father, even though there were no graves of any of his family, in respect for those buried in this location always kept up the cemetery and then her brother took on the responsibility of maintaining the cemetery. Even when the gravehouses had fallen down and there was nothing in the cemetery, Mr Lee kept the area cleared and mowed and never cultivated the area. The second Mr Lee's daughter, Denise Lee was maintaining the cemetery in 2003 when I spoke with her and her aunt, Althea Lee Everette.
Facing cemetery from road in the far right corner are Lee Family graves: Eucie Lee Powell, Floyd Lee, Shawn O Thomas, Willie Thornton Lee, Mabel L Boone, Katherine S Lee and Wilmon Haley Lee, earliest burial 1972 the second Mr Lee who maintained the cemetery.
