|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The first poor farm in Clare County began in 1871 in Section 35 of Grant Township on 80 acres. George Lutes was the first resident. When the county seat was moved to Harrison in 1879 it was decided to move the poor farm there too. The second poor farm was on 160 acres in Section 20 of Hayes Township just outside the growing village of Harrison. The third and final poor farm (location of the "Clare County Poor Farm Historical Cemetery") was renamed the "Clare County Infirmary" and was located on County Farm Road in Harrison. It opened in May of 1912. It closed in 1945 and burned in 1948. No burial records have been found and no gravestones exist at this site. Records do show many residents died at the farm and some are listed as "buried here." Many more are listed as "died here" but cannot be verified where they were buried. It said that over 100 graves are located here. The record books of the poor farm are currently being indexed by the Harrison District Library and a link will be posted here when they become available online.
