The cemetery was consecrated on 6 October 1834, and was officially closed to burials on 31 March 1865, though one more burial was permitted there in 1868.
In 1954, the cemetery was converted into a park, and over the following year the graves were exhumed and the tablets mounted in the walls. The only remaining standing memorial is the memorial to James Brooke Napier, a large gothic-style monument at the upper end of the southern wall. Twin cupolas remain in their original location on the Green, but there is no record that they were associated with any burial.
In the northeast corner of Fort Canning Green are a group of 12 standing gravestones that were moved to this spot from the now-defunct Bukit Timah Cemetery, which was closed in 1971 and converted into a park. The 12 graves are for: Wladimir Astafiew, Elliot Charles Bovill, Nelson William Cashin, William Cuppage, Hans Hermann Eschke, Arthur D. Forbes, George Thompson Hare, Chik Hassan, LDMA Hooglant, Jean Rudolph Lambert, Lee Khia Soon, and William Ronaldson.
