Feldafing is a small village in the Starnberg County district of Upper Bavaria in Bavaria. This cemetery was established around 1880 after the original church yard around the village church had become too small. Between 1957 and 1978 seven members of the former Austrian royal family von Habsburg had been buried in this cemetery. Their bodies were re-interred in Hungary in 2005. Just behind the chapel is the small Jewish cemetery, now forgotten and neglected. There used to be an older cemetery around the church between "Kirchplatz" and "Bahnhofstrasse", but it's gone, no markers left.
Unlike American cemeteries, due to lack of space, the "final" resting places in Germany are not eternal. The plots are usually leased (subscribed to) for a certain period of time (15-25 years). After that it depends on the descendants (or the community if it's a famous person) to finance another period of 15-25 years. If no family is left, and the grave is old, the plot is cleaned and will be used for another burial.
