|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Galilee Church Cemetery is located just before reaching Elliston on US 11/460. This cemetery was surveyed and marked graves photographed in October 1989 by the Roanoke Office of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. This former church cemetery, now a private cemetery, consisting of at least 118 graves with at least 29 unmarked is located at a boundary line between Roanoke County and Montgomery County. Driving west turn left off of US 11/460 onto State Rt 603 (now Cove Hollow Rd). Crossing railroad tracks, continue on Cove Hollow Rd approximately one mile more or less. Turn right just past Berry Patch Road onto private paved drive toward a small knoll. Entrance is beautifully landscaped. This rural well-kept cemetery is located to the left upon reaching the top of small knoll. James and Martha Vest McDaniel deeded land June 21, 1910 for a Methodist Episcopal church to be built. The cemetery existed before the church was established. The site of the old Galilee Methodist Episcopal Church now torn down offers a convenient spot to park as to not block entrance to the private extended driveway. The former church was located to the immediate northeast of the cemetery. The county line appears to cut the cemetery. There are sources which indicate that the cemetery is located in Roanoke County and an equal number of sources indicate that the cemetery is located in Montgomery County. The oldest graves appear to lie in Montgomery County while more recent graves appear to lie in Roanoke County. For other graves the headstone may be in Montgomery County with the footstone being in Roanoke County. The Cove Hollow community has long recognized Cove Hollow Road as the boundary for determing which school system a child attends, but the actual county boundary line is some distance from the said road. For FIND A GRAVE, cross-county linking is not possible. As this is now a private cemetery, please call (540) 218-5445 for additional information.
