In 1906, the church was renovated into a late Gothic Revival style one-story building with the entrance changing from a simple door at the south side of the building to an entrance with a vestibule on the east side.
In 1950's, the congregation expanded and left to build Aldersgate Methodist Church which is still in operation today. After that, other non-denominational congregations met there until 1970. It has not been in use as a church since then.
The cemetery is being restored and plays host to a variety of events like Wreathes Across America and a Fall Outdoor Sketch Event. In February 2020, Newark Union Church and Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and on December 14, 2020, a new historic marker was placed beside the cemetery.
The cemetery is a favorite of local genealogists as it contains some well-known families of Brandywine Hundred such as Talley, Weldin, Grubb, and Carr.
