In 1879 a visiting relative of Ezekiel J and Louisa J. McCleskey became ill and died. They buried her on the McCleskey homestead near an early church. The McCleskeys allowed other pioneer families in the community to use the grave site.
On July 11, 1907, Ezekiel and Louisa McCleskey executed a deed, citing a plot 278 feet by 178 feet to the Stephens county Judge for use as Mount Zion Cemetery. The deed was filed for record on January 4, 1908, and recorded in volume 32, page 303 of the Deed Records, Stephens County, Texas.
In 1970 Gailord V., a Mccleskey grandson, and his wife Freddiee MmcGowen donated a plot 50 feet by 178 feet on the north side of the cemetery. On May 12, 1979, (100 years later) the organization to provide for the cemetery was formed.
In 1983, C.L. and Lucille Derryberry donated a plot 50 feet by 328 feet on the east side of the original cemetery. This deed is recorded in volume 544, page 798 of the Deed Records.
They also called this cemetery the Veale Cemetery in the early days.
