|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery has had several names over the years: Marion Colored Cemetery, Morehead City Cemetery and Morehead Cemetery. It is very overgrown with weeds, saplings, brambles and a poisonous plant, i.e. poison ivy, oak or sumac. Some of the brambles are particularly vicious. It appears as if a dozen or so of the graves may have been moved. Some of the stones are still on those graves. I do not know if they are still buried here or not. The cemetery is supposed to contain approximately 110 marked graves and another 60 unmarked. We photographed Morehead Cemetery on February 15, 2012 and found only 87 marked graves. Many of the 'missing' stones may well be hidden in the overgrowth.
Directions: From downtown Marion going South on Rutherford Rd, just before Oak Grove Cemetery turn left onto Georgia Ave. Go 3/10 of a mile to the fourth driveway on the right. Turn right into the driveway onto what appears to be private property. It is not, it is the road leading to the cemetery. Follow it around a sharp curve to the right. Straight ahead is the cemetery, on both side of the road.
UPDATE: May 2013: This cemetery has now been cleared and is being maintained by the McDowell Cemetery Association.
UPDATE: Jan 25, 2015: We revisited Morehead Cemetery today to see if we missed any marked graves. We found an additional 33 tombstones. The cemetery is now totally cleared and looks terrific. The bottom photo on the right is as it looks today. Job well done, McDowell Cemetery Association!
