Cemetery notes and/or description:
This cemetery is located on Howard Street in the City of Boone, next to the Boone City Cemetery. A fence seperates the two cemeteries. It was considered the "Colored" Cemetery for many years. While there are probably dozens of graves, there are only three stones. On two sides of the cemetery are dormatories for Applachian State University. The third side has private appartment houses.
The cemetery was originally established for the slaves of the Councill Family, some of the original founders of the town of Boone.
The cemetery is now owned and maintained by the Jordan Councill Cemetery Association.
The current stones are probably misplaced as they had been occasionally "borrowed" by students at the University. When they were replaced it was not known where the original burial spot was located.
Most of the burials listed here are taken from "A Historical Survey of North Carolina", 1937. Compled by Chloe Greer.
There are at least three Civil War graves of Union Soldiers who died while in Boone. They were not deemed worthy of burial in the City Cemetery.
