The cemetery was established in the mid-19th century as a burial site for the inmates of the Poor House that was located in the Dunning nieghborhood in NW Chicago. Over the years burials included Civil War soldiers, victims of the Chicago Fire, paupers and uncliamed indigents. In 1912 the name was "Chicago Hospital Cemetery".
