Cemetery notes and/or description:
Hermannstraße 133
12051 Berlin

Tel.: (030) 622-1080

This is the youngest and the largest of the 8 cemeteries along Hermanstrasse, which opened in 1888 and has a size of 106,920 square meters, or 26.5 acres. It is owned and run by the Lutheran Emmaus Congregation. The cemetery also has a large war grave sections, the burial ground for civilians who died in the last months of WW II during Allied and Russian bombings.

There are 8 cemeteries located along this street in a highly populated urban area of Berlin. From North to South they are
1 St.-Jacobi-Friedhof I
2 Alter St. Michael Friedhof
3 Luisenstädtischer Friedhof II
4 St.-Thomas-Friedhof (old)
5 St.-Thomas-Friedhof (new)
6 Kirchhof Jerusalem und Neue Kirche V
7 St.-Jacobi-Friedhof II
8 Emmaus Friedhof

Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
