On Feb. 17, 1755 two acres of land were given by the Proprietors of Groton to the Town of Shirley for use as the first burial ground in Shirley. There was a stonewall around the cemetery until 1857 after which granite posts and iron rails were set along the roadside. In 1860 the cemetery was enlarged by another 1.25 acres.
The first burial in the cemetery was for Abraham Holden on April 18, 1754.
