|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Situated beside the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura, in the Tiburtino area of Rome, the Cimitero Comunale Monumentale Campo Verano is the city's largest cemetery, covering eighty hectares and some five million internments. Initiated during the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in conformity with Napoleon Bonaparte's 1804 Edict of Saint-Cloud, which forbade burials in churches and towns, the name 'Verano' dates back to the Roman era, when the 'Campo dei Verani' stood once in the area where the cemetery now stands.
