This church, called the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, is a Mission of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Pecos, New Mexico. It was built in 1857 near El Macho ("mule") Creek, possibly over the ruins of an earlier Indian church. It was used by the miners at Terrero from 1927 to 1939.
Mass continues to be celebrated in the church several times per year, including during Las Posadas (a Christmas tradition), when it is lit by lanterns and heated by a wood stove. Family members of traditional parishioners continue to be buried in its graveyard.
The Saint Anthony of Padua Parish was established by Bishop Jean-Baptiste in Lamy, New Mexico in 1862. In addition to the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in El Macho Canyon, the Parish also includes several other churches, including the Sagrada Familia in Rowe, the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Glorieta, the Santo Niño in Colonias, and the Nuestra Señora de la Luz in Cañoncito.
