Cemetery notes and/or description:
Alter (Stadt-) Friedhof
85221 Dachau
Tel 08131 - 36380
Fax 08131 - 363840

This is the oldest of the four cemeteries in the jurisdiction of the city of Dachau in Bavaria (Germany). Those are
Alter (Stadt-) Friedhof
Dachau (Waldfriedhof)
Pellheim Cemetery
Etzenhausen Cemetery

The street it is located at is called Gottesacker, which is an old German word for cemetery, it mean's "The Lord's Field". The chapel inside (Gottesackerkapelle) was built in 1627/28 and underwent serious renovations in 1992-95. The architect was Hans Krumpper.

Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
