Originally called the Old City Cemetery, the first interments were in 1829. Families would just choose a spot and place their family members there. As a result many of the oldest burials are unrecorded. In 1845, the city of Columbus implemented a systematic approach to the cemetery and by 1866 records were compiled in a ledger. The name was changed to Linwood Cemetery in 1894.
For several years, this cemetery fell into despair and neglect. The Historic Linwood Foundation was formed to rejuvenate and restore the cemetery and record the history.
Within this site, established by Reform congregation Temple B'nai Israel, is the first burial ground in Columbus for members of the Jewish Faith. The first burial was in 1852. Louis Haiman, famous Civil War arms maker for the Confederacy, is interred here as are ancestors of many prominent Columbus families. Jewish burial traditions continue today in the city's Riverdale Cemetery.
