Cemetery notes and/or description: In 1808, the Montgomery Street Church (now called the Dumbarton Avenue United Methodist Church) purchased this property for a cemetery. The cemetery allowed burials of both black and white members, although the cemetery was segregated by race. In 1879, the grounds were leased for 99 years to the Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, a black congregation that split off from the Montgomery Street Church, which resulted in the cemetery becoming the Mount Zion Methodist Cemetery. The Female Union Band Society was formed in 1842 and purchased land adjacent to the Montgomery Street Methodist Church Cemetery. There is no physical demarcation separating the two cemeteries. The two cemeteries together are about 3 acres in extent.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the original cemetery is 529678 (Old Methodist Burying Ground).
