Cemetery notes and/or description: This historic cemetery served Dania, the oldest city in Broward Co., Florida. It was founded in 1904 as part of Dade County, and served as the burial ground for tomato farmers, who settled in the area from Wisconsin. As most were of Danish heritage, the town was named Dania.
It adjoins Dania Memorial Cemetery, along what is known as the Dixie Highway Crossover. It was originally an integrated cemetery, until 1937-1940, when all African-American graves were relocated to Westlawn Cemetery. In 1986, the city of Dania erected a monument to their memory.
The original plat was by Charles Pratt, C.E. on July 20, 1909. See Dade County Plat Book 1, p. 17 (Dania City Cemetery). |
