or Landeseigener Friedhof Berlin-Altglienicke
This non-denominational cemetery was opened in the first decade of the 19th century and is owned and run by the city of Berlin ("Landeseigener Friedhof"). It is one of the smaller cemeteries in the district of Treptow-Köpenick in Berlin. It has a size of 23.520 square meters or 5.8 acres.
In the back of the cemetery there is a mourner's hall with two wings of larger family plots, which form an almost half circle. Behind this structure there is a memorial field with war graves of both world wars.
Most German cemeteries have a period of repose of 20-40 years, which means that after about 20 years of a person's death the plot will be re-used. Unless there is family left which purchases another period of repose for a pre-set time. If no one is left the grave will eventually be leveled and re-used. In many German areas the rear structures of sometimes elaborate grave monuments are kept intact, for historical reasons, but the plot itself is being re-used. Since the original occupants and their coffins have naturally decomposed (no poisonous embalming in Germany) the plot is often filled with new urn burials.
This cemetery also has a small area for anonymous burials of cremains.
Nearby is the Lutheran cemetery Kirchhof Alt-Glienicke.
