Cemetery notes and/or description:
This is a confusing cemetery because of it's proximity to the county line. Most people probably associate it with the town of Homer (which is in Hamilton County). However the cemetery (which is 1 mile east and 3 1/2 south of Homer) is actually in Webster County.
From about 500 B.C. to about 1200 A.D. the people who inhabited the region often laid their dead on a hilltop and then piled dirt on top; thus creating a mound of earth.
When the early white settlers decided that this hilltop overlooking the Des Moines river would be a nice place for a cemetery, they probably did not know enough about the history of the area to recognize that there was any significance to the 5 mounds of earth on the hilltop.
Much later (in 1960) E.H. Hawbaker erected a monument in the cemetery to give recognition to the fact that this hilltop held special significance long before it became a white-man's cemetery.
