The Westport Cemetery is located within the unincorporated community of Westport, Oregon in the northeast corner of Clatsop County.This all-volunteer pioneer cemetery located south of U. S. Hwy 30 off Hungry Hollow Loop Rd. and McLean Hill Rd.
This property was part of "Captain" John West's original 640-acre
Donation Land Claim #3671, recorded April 3, 1851.
The first burial at this location was for Ellen West McGuire, who died
15 Dec 1870 of typhoid fever.She was the youngest of four daughters of "Captain" John West and his wife Margaret West. "Captain" West was the town's founder.Ellen married Charles McGuire in Westport in 1862.They had two children: Robert Edward and Ellen "Nellie."
The Westport Cemetery Association was organized at a meeting in Westport on June 12, 1909.Malcolm M. McFarland was elected as Clerk of the Association. He was born in Nova Scotia in June 1859.He owned a logging operation in Westport in the 1880s and 1890s. He died in 1918 and is buried in Westport Cemetery.
William M. Wright was selected as chairman at the first Association
meeting and elected as one of three Association trustees.He was an
apiarist and worked at The Westport Lumber Company sawmill. Generations of the Wright's family have resided in Westport and still do today, many working in the sawmill. Willian M. Wright had lived in the community for 38 years when he died and was buried in Westport Cemetery in 1941.
Dan McLean was also elected as a trustee at the first Association
meeting.He was born in 1867 in Nova Scotia and died in Westport in
1938.He was an early farmer in Westport and then worked in the sawmill for 46 years, starting in 1915.He was also a deputy sheriff and the road supervisor for the district.McLean Hill Road, where the cemetery is located, is named after him.
The third trustee was John West, Jr., a grandson of Captain John West. He was the owner and operator of the Westport general store. He never married. At the time of his death, he was an accountant and had been living in the Portland area for 28 years.
The three members of the Westport Cemetery Association were Mrs. Robert West, Robert McMath and Louis Napoleon.Mrs. Robert West (Margaret O'Donahue) was born in 1868 in Nova Scotia.She was married to Robert West, the youngest son of Captain John West.Robert McMath was born in 1856 in Scotland.He was a dairy farmer in Westport for 70 years. Louis Napoleon was born in Louisiana.He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and came to Westport circa 1870.He is the only black buried in the Westport Cemetery.
The cemetery has one grave marked "Indian Remains."This grave contains bones found when Indian burial mounds were unearthed on the Westport School property when the play field was expanded.
Westport cemetery also has a grave marked "Chinamen."When Captain John West operated his salmon cannery in the late 1860s and 1870s, he employed over fifty Chinese workers there.
